John Cassavetes was the chronicler of human deficiency in American society in the sixties and seventies. With a cast of often the same actors, he created close-up, often recognizably painful portraits of everyday men and women. The fact that he also made a crime film does not seem to fit in with that image. 'The Killing Of A Chinese Bookie' from 1976 is, however, a typical Cassavetes: the crime story only serves as a vehicle for the film version of the struggling life of a nightclub owner, played by the great Ben Gazarra.

Just looked again.

Great atmosphere: a man who also sees that it is all rather poor, but tries to make the best of it. Sad, gray affair, but perfectly captured, credible acting by everyone.

The well-known style of John Cassavetes this time applied to a crime and murder story. In comparison, I find his films that are purely about human relationships (without a crime component) even more impressive because Cassavetes also manages to keep it interesting there. But in this film that takes place in the underworld, the uncompromising documentary style works just as well. The nice thing about it is that you don't have the idea that there is acting. And I find that special about Cassavetes' films.

What I've seen is the director's cut. Maybe I'll watch the long version again later.
