After the sudden death of his older brother, Lee Chandler is appointed as guardian for his son. Lee returns to his hometown to care for him. There, he must deal with both his ex-wife Randi and the North Shore community.

'Manchester by the Sea' (2016) knows the two biggest Hollywood clichés - unfit family member has a child under his/her rule; a traumatized person returns to a village community - to give it a fresh meaning. The narrative in which the family traumas emerge as in a mystery story in the subtle flashbacks. The scenes in which the minor irritations and subcutaneous tensions turn out to be the symptom of the disturbed family relationships, while the heart-wrenching moments come in hard when the characters lose their decorum through psychological suffering and thereby let their emotions run free. And yet it is also a very funny film in how it portrays recognizable things as those typical male manners and those painfully uncomfortable social situations. Perhaps not a film that deserves the originality prize because it does something fundamentally new with the topics addressed (bereavement, dysfunctional family dynamics, trauma), but because of the excellent elaboration it manages to hit exactly in the right ways.

In Manchester by the Sea, director Kenneth Lonergan takes a set-up that could be executed in a very clichéd and melodramatic way. How many times have we seen an outsider return to the place he came from and have to deal with a great loss. However, Lee never gets overly emotional and the characters don't suddenly start acting like saints. In fact, Lee and Patrick are really jerks. One looks for a fight in bars and the other casually has two girlfriends. Yet you do empathize with them, which is partly due to the strong acting.
I'm usually not a fan of Casey Affleck, but here and in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford I really liked him. You can imagine how surprised I was to see Matthew Broderick in a movie like this, but he was definitely cast in the role of Christian family man.
The cinematography of the film may not have been very impressive, but because it wasn't very present, it didn't distract from the acting either. Also liked the way classical music is incorporated in the film.
All in all, an unexpectedly strong film, because it was a very compelling drama.

Close to the full five stars. What a great movie this is. Let me warn you in advance that you have to be in the mood to appreciate/be able to tolerate a film like this.
It is a jet-black drama that grabs you by the throat and won't let go for a while. Fortunately, there is room for some humor so that you are not completely depressed during the credits. Good choice by Lonergan to also put a smile on the face of the viewer every now and then.
But most of the film is filled with sadness, drama and misery. The story is not told chronologically, so at the beginning of the film you have to think carefully whether the scene is set in the past or present.
After about forty minutes everything becomes clear when a major drama takes place. Immensely strong and dramatic scene that haunts you as a viewer for a while.
Only then everything becomes clear, including why the character Lee, the main character in the film, behaves this way. Unparalleled rendition of Casey Affleck, of course completely deserved that he received the Oscar. The scene with Michelle Williams, the so-called pram scene, is the best acting scene I've seen in ages. A real masterclass in acting.
The ending fits exactly in the style of the movie. A film that you will not soon forget and that almost gets the full score. Maybe after revision, for now 4.5*.

The movie is dramatically compelling, and I acknowledge that. But if many family characters are portrayed as dead in a film, you don't need extra effort to enhance their dramatic nature.
