I enjoyed this part.

As always in the later installments, the explosions, along with Gojira and his opponent, are the main attraction. They look very beautiful and colorful, and quite destructive too.

The story is... far-fetched. I think Bolliante is a cool monster, but coming up with a story around it isn't easy, but in the end, they managed it quite well. The first version of Bolliante looked impressive, especially the lighting, and I just thought the second version was really cool. I also thought the special effects looked good, with all those moving tentacles. It makes for some great fights and visuals.

Too bad this one runs a bit too long, especially the aftermath at the end (a little over 10 minutes) should have been significantly shortened. Gojira films deserve a Shaw Bros. ending.

It's also fun model-making and cheesy Thunderbirds fiddling, but presented in a remarkably positive (if amateurish) way.

This Godzilla is also too long and too serious. I hope the rest of the series doesn't stay at the same level, because then there's little to enjoy, I fear. On paper, this material should guarantee the most utter nonsense, and you see that, for example, in the form of Biollante (mutated rose bush ), but the context is simply unfunny and too serious. The battles with Gojira are also extremely disappointing, and so little remains of pulp like this. Let's hope for more enjoyable installments, then.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. This was my introduction to the Japanese Godzilla, and it left me wanting more. The film flowed smoothly, and it was all delightfully over-the-top. Cool miniature sets and tacky costumes. The fact that the creators take the flawed story seriously is simply hilarious.

Revisited after years in Criterion's 4K. Beautiful cover, by the way.

In the previous film, Godzilla fell into a volcano, and the Japanese hoped to finally defeat him. False hope, of course, because after five years, he's back, yay! Once again, he's making his way toward Tokyo to wreak havoc. Fortunately, scientists have already obtained Godzilla cells. They use them to cultivate a plant monster called Biollante, or as the Japanese call it, Biolantica. This rose bush would serve as a defense and would fight against Godzilla.

Pffff what an excruciatingly boring episode this was. The attack with the Thunderbirds Super X2 was repeated several times and was starting to get annoying. Also, of course, a lot of miniature battles in toyland, which sometimes looked quite nice for kids. The only plus point was the last fifteen minutes when things finally got a bit loose, but even that couldn't save the film.
