Nice film in which a boy runs away from home and finds shelter with a group of punks. The film knows how to portray the period and especially the youthful subculture well. There is no story and the whole thing seems a bit unstructured (which on the one hand also fits the subject well). Sometimes quite raw and nice to see a young Flea here (together with his rat).

Revisited on Blu-ray from 101BlackLabel. The directorial debut of Penelope Spheeris.

The story begins with Evan saying goodbye to his younger brother Ethan and running away from home to escape his single mother who is an alcoholic and has a hard time. When he is found drunk on the street by Jack (Chris Pedersen) shortly afterwards, he takes him in and takes him into the family of TR (The Rejected). They are a punk rock family of runaway kids who live in a squat in the suburbs. Shortly afterwards, Evan sees on TV how his mother has been arrested for causing a drunk driving accident. He picks up his younger brother from home and he is also taken into the family. What follows is a raw picture of this group who become the target of “Citizens Against Crime”, a group of suburban residents, with a number of fatal twists.

Beautiful drama with ditto soundtrack. I thought Chris Pedersen played by far the best of the group. He played in Night of the Comet, Platoon and Point Break.

Razzle, the boy with the rat, was played by Mike B. The Flea, the bassist of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

In the special features I heard that there were live performances by DI, TSOL and The Vandals. I am not familiar with these punk rock bands, not my kind of music, but nice to know.

The Rejected

An honest look at punk culture in the early 80s. These young people were mostly outcasts from abnormal and loveless families, living together in a community surrounded by garbage and cockroaches. They were frowned upon by "ordinary" citizens and even threatened with violence by a vigilante group. But beyond the impoverished living conditions, we also see the musical culture, the antisocial behavior, the marginalization. I thought the portrayal was very well-done and believable. What do you mean, it's absurd? Of course, the behavior of these young people is absurd! That's precisely the point: the aimlessness of their lives, the lack of support.

Spheeris certainly managed to make an entertaining and raw film, and you can sense that research went into this film; almost every character gets a voice. As expected, it heads towards a sad ending. Suburbia is a fine film. Two thumbs up.
