This first film adaptation of Piet Bakker's Ciske novels is somewhat overshadowed by the much better known version from 1984. This older version is only referred to three times in that thread. A heartbreaking story about a boy who has to endure all kinds of misery, told from the perspective of his schoolmaster Bruis. Franciscus Vrijmoeth is the son of a sailor (who loves him but is away from home a lot) and of a worthless alcoholic mother who abuses and belittles him. His father has a mistress, the kind-hearted aunt Jans where Ciske occasionally finds shelter.

Ciske's poor upbringing and home situation make him rebellious and no one sees a bright future for him. The school principal advises a heavy-handed approach. But Mr. Bruis has a different opinion. He gains the boy's trust and takes care of him, until Ciske unintentionally kills his mother and he has to go to the disciplinary school.

A sad story that sometimes pinches the heart because the boy is constantly having to endure one thing after another. This is balanced by a few good-natured people who support him (Druis, Father de Goeij, Betje, Aunt Jans). No one is to blame for his origins and it turns out that Ciske is fundamentally a good boy. Really enjoyed this film that is quite raw and direct in its approach, and is closer to the books than its sentimental successor with songs.
