Die Weiße Rose plot
During World War II, a small group of students from the University of Munich begin to question the decisions and goodness of the Nazi government. The students form a resistance group that they call the 'White Rose', after a newspaper that is secretly distributed among students. At first they form a small group, afraid to be discovered. However, support for the White Rose quickly grows after a provocative speech spirals out of control at the hands of the Nazis. From that moment on, the Gestapo is called in, whose sole purpose is to find and destroy the members of the White Rose.

Sophie Scholl - Die Letzten Tage, as the title suggests, is about the final days, the interrogations, and the "trial." Die Weisse Rose, also viewed through Sophie's eyes, covers a much longer period, whereas the story of Die Letzten Tage is essentially summarized in only a few final scenes. Qualitatively, Die Letzten Tage is better than this 30-year-old low-budget film, yet it is at least just as impressive. The film led to Germany declaring all verdicts of the people's courts null and void.
The story of Die Weisse Rose is just as extraordinary as it is ordinary. A small group of students standing up for their ideals. Only they do so at the risk of their own lives, and that was probably the only way to wage that battle.
Many people do it nowadays: expressing their criticism of governments or other rulers on Facebook, blogs, etc. And still at risk to their own lives, for example in countries like China, Mexico, Syria, etc. But also think of WikiLeaks. While millions of others passively look the other way.
The usefulness and importance of this are evident from the penalties imposed. Shady rulers are terrified that such initiatives of passive resistance will spread among the population and jeopardize their selfish interests.
Die Weisse Rose is a warning against the danger of a mass that withdraws from events, that passively endures them. They have shown how valuable freedom of speech is.

An interesting film about the legendary resistance group from Munich against the Nazis. The oppressive feeling I always get when (re)watching Sophie Scholl - Die Letzten Tage (2005) was absent this time. I missed the necessary tension and bite. Furthermore, Lena Stolze's acting falls far short of that of Julia Jentsch in Sophie..…. Nevertheless, an important film, if only because it led to the legal rulings of the Volksgerichthöfe being declared null and void retroactively, albeit rather late.
