Krieg der Lügen plot

In 1999 Rafed Ahmed Alwan al-Janabi fled his native Iraq and ended up in Cologne. On his asylum application he states that he worked as a chemical engineer in the military-industrial complex in Iraq. That draws attention. An employee of the German intelligence service BND tells him that "they" want to topple Saddam Hussein, Al-Janabi said. Music to the ears of this Iraqi, who above all wants to get rid of the dictator who killed a million compatriots with poison gas. Al-Janabi suggests that Hussein possesses weapons of mass destruction and sketches the chemical-biological complex where he worked. “Curveball” becomes his – in retrospect revealing – code name...

In 1999, Rafed Ahmed Alwan fled from Iraq via Morocco to Germany. There he ended up in the bureaucratic merry-go-round (and in a glorified internment camp). From the moment he revealed that he was working as a chemical engineer in an Iraqi factory, he was subjected to frequent interrogations. The information Rafed provided played a key role in the United States' decision to invade Iraq - after all, there were weapons of mass destruction there. When no evidence of this was found, Rafed Ahmed Alwan (code name “Curveball”) was given the black spot. In this documentary he tells his story, but how seriously can you take someone who confesses a huge lie? Bittner asks pressing questions, but would probably have done well to also interview people who could weigh Rafed's testimony. Moreover, the German dubbing is quite disturbing for non-German viewers.
