Jun Zhong Le Yuan plot
1969. The story of Pao, who is sent to Kinmen for military service. He is assigned to the Sea Dragons Reconnaissance Battalion, where he befriends Sergeant Major Zhang. Despite his friendship, Pao is soon expelled from the amphibious unit for his lack of swimming skills, after which he is transferred to Unit 831, better known as "Paradise in Service". He is saddled with the task of overseeing the “tea house”, where the troops on the island are served in a special way by “comfort women”.

Rather unbalanced melodrama about an army-run brothel, where women with a more or less dark past are forced by the government to work as prostitutes to boost the morale of the Taiwanese troops. The film chooses to reserve the dramatic moments for the fortunes of the women and their love partners, while the training of the soldiers takes care of the more comedic part. Attempts to include a number of romantic subplots barely get off the ground. All in all, a far too good film, which is only worth a passing grade with some good will.

Since 1950, Chiang Kai-shek has been exiled from China and rules as president of the island of Taiwan, which is constantly at odds with China. In 1969, Lo Pao-Tai [Ethan Juan] is trained near Quemoy (also known as Kinmen) to defend Taiwan. He becomes good friends with his superior Major Chang [Jianbin Chen] who convinces him to visit a brothel known as 841 of Paradise. It is not only a place for sex, but also for emotional support. Lo Pao-Tai falls for the lovely Nini [Regina Wan] and Chang for the opportunistic Jiao [Ivy Chen]. A potentially interesting story falls prey to an overdose of sentiment in the second half and with a running time of 132 minutes, this is at least half an hour too long.
