Irrational Man plot

Philosophy professor Abe Lucas (Joaquin Phoenix) is in an existential crisis. He tries to give his life new input by starting a friendly relationship with one of his students named Jill (Emma Stone). She immediately falls for the charismatic philosopher with all his deep thoughts and reflections. And although this flattery initially seems to be the flame that awakens Abe from his dozed existence, it soon becomes apparent that he is still looking for something to really pursue the ultimate goal in life. When he accidentally learns of a major personal injustice in a lawsuit, Abe finally knows what to do…

Meh.

Talkative. About all existential nonsense. Philosophy means nothing to me, the few names and some references to theories can be stolen from me. Whatever.

Fortunately, Abe is still a colorful character. Teenage girl Jill annoyed me the entire runtime.

Joaquin Phoenix plays excellent, although again it is a character that seeks meaning and joy. A slightly different character from time to time is also allowed. Emma Stone is doing okay in principle, but her character doesn't appeal to me at all. In the few scenes she has, I find Parker Posey a lot more enjoyable.

Woody Allen keeps it light, maybe for the better. The hour and a half drags a bit further, but the ending lacks tension, which was the intention after all, I think.

2.5

How Woody Allen delights me time and again with fine, lightly comical and light-hearted films. Every year a new one, and the nice thing is: I haven't seen a lot of them yet. No masterpieces, I don't want to say that, but never disappointing in any case; Matchpoint, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger, I gave them all a 4*.

At first I thought the story was a bit short, but then the sudden Crime & Punishment twist came and it became interesting after all. Emma Stone who, like Sonja, insists that her boyfriend (Phoenix) reports to the police, but that ends slightly differently than in the book haha .. Oh, and that shameless beer belly from Phoenix indeed, delicious!

Another wise quote from Woody Allen, not from this film by the way: 'There was never a blind person in the nudist camp.'

Allen disappoints again with this garrulous film about alcoholic philosophy professor Abe Lucas [Joaquin Phoenix] who, shortly after his tenure at Braylin University in Newport, can count on the attention of both college student Jill Pollard [Emma Stone] and colleague Rita Richards [Parker Posey]. Abe lets it all come to him in his aimless life, until he convinces himself that he can give meaning to his life by plotting a murder. Phoenix and Stone spend a lot of time discussing philosophical issues as they wander aimlessly around campus. Although Allen always makes sure that this produces nice pictures (thanks to Darius Khondji) it does not yield anything interesting. Posey has the best moments.
