The film is primarily a reflection on censorship and it also shows that a director who is forced into a certain form (not being able to film openly) can actually get a lot out of it and explore other boundaries. A bit what the Dogme idea was. The script in particular is really inventive. It will be no coincidence that the film Shirin, which in my opinion is even more innovative than this one, also comes from Iran. I also found Taxi Tehranentertaining, but that was about it.

I knew the documentary/film by name, but didn't really know what to expect. It is a concept that was also briefly on the Flemish airwaves. A driving taxi driver who has conversations with his passengers with a camera. At Panahi you also get environmental images of the busy streets of Tehran where something is always happening.

It is difficult to distinguish fiction from reality, but Panahi is exceeding his limits by Iranian standards by playing with the censorship. I read courageous here before, that's the best way to describe it, just as commendable. But not very memorable cinematically, which was not the intention of course.

Director Jafar Panahi secretly shot this film due to his 20-year directing ban with actors who were not credited due to fear of the regime and possible prosecution. Panahi was also unable to attend the Golden Bear award ceremony due to the confiscation of his passport, so he sent his niece to the event on his behalf to receive it. A special background story, but reading about it is a lot more interesting than the content of Taxi Tehran. First of all, you shouldn't expect beautiful pictures of Iran. Somewhat understandable given the situation, on the other hand the background makes a rather dry and dusty impression. A little more experimentation was in order left and right. In addition, after a quite fascinating first half, the film collapses after the entrance of the little girl. The caricatures are pushed too much, giving more realistic characters, such as Panahi himself, less room to remain credible. The fact that Panahi almost exclusively encounters odd ducks makes it no mystery that the film is not a documentary but acted fiction. The political discussions are sharp and the acting is even excellent, but the second half, which also starts to deviate more from the socially critical aspect, brings the film to a mediocre picture after a fascinating first half.
