Hemelbestormers plot

April 2014 a Dutch expedition leaves for the Himalayas to climb the Cho Oyu, the fifth highest mountain in the world. Two Dutch people were killed on previous expeditions to this mountain (2009 and 2011). The Cho Oyu is located next to Mount Everest where 14 Sherpas (mountain guides) were killed last spring. Investigative journalist and documentary maker Geertjan Lassche follows the Dutch expedition closely, went up with him and wondered what drives the 'sky stormers' deep down. In theory, the Cho Oyu is better to do than the Everest.

Mountain climbing without all the heroism and glorification of that activity. The documentary follows a group of reasonably trained climbers who encounter their own imperfections when they encounter bad luck. Do you choose your own desire to get to the top, or are you willing to sacrifice yourself for the common good? Let it be clear that the people filmed here do not always automatically choose the most morally lofty path. That makes this somewhat fragmentary documentary quite intriguing because it clearly shows how moral choices are partly determined by extreme circumstances.

It is also something that the death of one of them hangs over this attempt like a dark cloud, while they themselves no longer seem to be able to put into perspective what is really important in a human life. This means that the bitter ending in which the top is not reached in a rather lame way is also positive and uplifting in a way. They are thus forced to recognize their superiority in the circumstances of nature and fate, but without any of them actually becoming victims of their pride.

Nice documentary.

If the idea was to make an advertisement for Wilco van Rooijen's shipping company, it failed - you would have to be crazy to want to climb a mountain more than 10 meters high with this irresponsible and antisocial gentleman. Grand prize for the most disliked role in any film I have ever seen. You will only have paid for an expedition that is led by him - and which ruthlessly turns out to be nothing more than a means for him to achieve his personal goals. Also fully matches the image I got of him from reading his book about the climb of the K2 - the key words are overconfidence, unsympathetic, ignorant, and antisocial. The complete opposite of the words I hold in high regard among mountain climbers: respect, perspective, humility and inner strength.

Not that the other participants come off better. In the middle of what must be one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, they stand and lament that they have not been to the top of the mountain. Haven't they learned that it's about the journey, not the destination? Haven't they asked themselves in advance how far they want to go? And haven't they learned that it's not about reaching the top, but about getting back there safely?

Not a pretty picture of the mountain climber, I'm afraid. But a very tight documentary - very neutral in reporting in the sense that it is left up to the viewer what you think about it.

To me that is very clear. These people have no business in the mountains. Not the right mentality.

Fairly fascinating documentary about a Dutch expedition to the Himalayas to climb Cho Oyu, the fifth highest mountain in the world. Beautiful pictures and of course the usual hardships, but the most interesting aspect concerns the mutual understanding and tensions within the group. Not the best documentary in the genre, but smoothly and entertainingly put together by investigative journalist and director Geertjan Lassche.
