Antarctica: A Year on Ice plot

"Step Outside The Box"

A documentary about what it's like to live and work for a year in Antarctica, at the very bottom of our planet. The story is told not from the point of view of scientists, but from the point of view of the people who spend the most time there: the workers who keep the stations running in the most unforgiving place on Earth. The documentary was filmed over a period of 15 years, including winters cut off from the rest of the world and months of darkness in the coldest place on Earth.

Finally.

A documentary that really appeals to me. It offers what I expect from a good documentary. And then in the summer, this one will be well located too. Enjoy staring at the chilly ice plains and mountains of snow. You suddenly feel a little colder.

A nice mix of elements. On the one hand entertaining and factual, on the other hand also plenty of personal stories that each highlight a different side of the continent. Not everything is rosy either, by the way, that saw event may be a bit of a nuisance, but someone like that is needed to give a documentary like this some credibility.

In addition to the talking heads, there is also a lot of attention for the continent itself, of course. Fortunately, in addition to classic nature shots, there are also many other things, such as timelapses and more abstract shots. Very nice all.

And then Powell also fails to ram in the ecological message that is constantly lurking. It passes by where necessary, but also disappears just as quickly so that the rest of the documentary has space and it does not become an indictment of this or that. Awesome!

You shouldn't send me there, but for 90 minutes I shared with the people who spend their time there for a year. More of this please!

4.0* and extensive review

Beautifully filmed documentary that shows how amazing, beautiful, heavy, cold, impressive and isolating life in Antarctica can be. Some people give you the impression that it can be very hard (one guest in particular was only negative about it), others say that it is a special life experience. And apparently you're going to miss avocados a lot after a hibernation.

Fascinating documentary about what it's like to live and work in Antarctica for a year, told by the workers who keep things running during the winter months, in the most unforgiving place on earth. Impressively filmed by director Anthony Powell, who himself lives and works in McMurdo, where the documentary largely takes place. The loneliness and desolation of the continent are brought to the fore, as is the beauty.
