A mentally disturbed man, who was in the state insane asylum with the late Norman Bates, inherits the legendary Bates Motel after Norman's death and tries to turn it into a respectable business.

It was supposed to mark the start of a new series, but this film by director Richard Rothstein ultimately achieved little or nothing. The strange progression immediately reveals why, because almost all mysterious and creepy influences are wiped away in Bates Motel. Rothstein mainly makes it a comedy that turns into a drama towards the end. The horror moments also make an unfortunate and forced impression, as if the screenwriters occasionally suddenly realized that the roots of the series came from horror and thriller land. It is a very bland affair with few highlights, but I still appreciated certain moralistic touches and the leading role of Bud Cort. Fanatics of the Psycho series will (rightly) walk away from this somewhat disappointed.
