Alec Baldwin has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter for the second time.
In October of 2021, Halyna Hutchins was tragically killed after Baldwin's prop gun was discharged during the filming of Rust, while director Joel Souza was also hit and injured. An extensive investigation was instigated by producers as well as the family of Hutchins, who filed a wrongful death lawsuit.
A settlement was made with her family, but charges were subsequently filed against Baldwin. He and his lawyer maintained his innocence consistently, and the charges were dropped.
"We are pleased with the decision to dismiss the case against Alec Baldwin and we encourage a proper investigation into the facts and circumstances of this tragic accident," Baldwin's lawyers Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro said in a joint statement.
New evidence against Baldwin
However, the case has been reopened after new evidence against Baldwin presented itself.
“After extensive investigation over the past several months, additional facts have come to light that we believe show Mr. Baldwin has criminal culpability in the death of Halyna Hutchins and the shooting of Joel Souza,” special prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis previously explained.
Baldwin claimed that he did not pull the trigger at all on the prop gun, but investigators have determined that it could not have been discharged if Baldwin didn't pull the trigger.
This week, he pleaded not guilty to all charges, but if found guilty he could face up to 18 months in prison.
