The ten-part AVROTROS hospital series De Poli balances between comedy and drama. The two strong opening episodes are full of good jokes and are recognizable in the everyday discomfort in the workplace. The final episodes have more dramatic moments and are strongly reminiscent of the series Dag & Nacht, which also takes place in a maternity ward of a hospital. With actors such as Porgy Franssen and Jelka van Houten - with Susan Visser and Dunya Khayame also creator of the Poli - the series has a solid foundation. The other characters in the Poli are sufficiently appealing.
Occasionally some scenes feel somewhat forced, making the Poli farcical, for example in the final episode. The caricatured storylines here and there are also sometimes disturbing. However, this does not alter the fact that there is still a lot to enjoy, especially thanks to the great performances of Jelka van Houten and Chris Peters as the intern. At those moments the thick humor comes into its own.
