Black Bird plot

When high school soccer hero, decorated son of police officer and convicted drug dealer Jimmy Keene, is sentenced to 10 years in a minimum security prison, he is given the choice of a lifetime: enter a maximum security prison for the criminally insane and befriend the suspected serial killer Larry Hall, or stay where he is and serve his full sentence with no chance of parole. Keene soon realizes that his only way out is to provoke a confession and find out where the bodies of several young girls are buried before Hall's job is accepted. But is this suspected killer telling the truth? Or is it just another serial liar story?

The psychological true-crime thriller Black Bird is based on an exciting but wonderful premise. Drug dealer James Keene (a charming Taron Egerton) helps the FBI convict suspected serial killer Larry Hall (an outstanding Paul Walter Hauser). Keene has to go undercover as a prisoner. Executive producer Dennis Lehane (The Outsider, Mr. Mercedes) has perfectly translated the book James Keene himself wrote about it to television.

Similar in style to Mindhunter, Black Bird focuses on the intriguing and fascinating relationship between Keene and Hall. We get to know these inmates through flashbacks - which add something but at the same time take the tempo off a bit. Strong dialogues, beautifully cool acting and a final performance by Ray Liotta. Apple TV+ is making a name for itself as a quality and innovative series provider. Black Bird is horribly good.
