This Is Going to Hurt plot

Adam is a doctor who works in the obstetrics and gynecology department. He works his way up through all ranks in the hospital hierarchy. He also incorporates Shruti into all the processes and procedures involved. The long hours and stress associated with many decisions have a major impact on his personal life, and he goes to great lengths to keep up with everything. Added to this is a protracted lawsuit over a medical decision, causing a lot of worry and a decline in his confidence. It does allow him to spend some time on himself.

This Is Going to Hurt season 1

This Is Going To Hurt is a British drama that tells the story of young doctor Adam Kay (also author of the book) in the maternity ward of a hospital. Kay is played excellently by Ben Whishaw (Fargo, A Very English Scandal). With a good dose of criticism of the NHS/National Health Service, we get a smooth look into Kay's life. So in addition to childbirth, work pressure, underpayment and cynicism, we also see the - otherwise rather uninteresting - private struggles of our doctor on duty.

This Is Going To Hurt starts off messy and hectic and we have to wait until episode 5 (of 7) for the hoped-for dramatic developments. Those are so intense that they are a bit out of place, in the otherwise mostly light-hearted scenario. Also, the roles of Kay's mother and the gynecologist (Miss Houghton) are so stereotyped or exaggerated that they are annoyingly implausible. And certainly not funny at all. In short: a hospital, unsympathetic characters, a few good jokes and heavy drama do not always guarantee a good British drama.
