Rond de Noordzee plot

In 'Around the North Sea', Arnout Hauben sets off on a five thousand kilometer journey around the North Sea together with Philippe Niclaes and Ruben Callens. He goes in search of the rich history of that sea and collects surprising stories that have taken place on and around the water. Arnout tells stories from the ice age and prehistory, about the arrival of the Vikings and fateful super storms and about new ideas, merchandise and diseases that have spread through the North Sea.

Toch wel een alleraardigste reeks; de aanhouder wint dus! Vooral in het middendeel zitten enkele fraaie afleveringen, al is het vooral de natuur die betovert. Aflevering 4 is daar het beste voorbeeld van; de Shetland- en Orkney-eilanden als setting is fantastisch, Fair Isle was zelfs uitnodigend om alles achter te laten en daarnaartoe te gaan! Arnout Hauben brengt echter geen verrassingen, want de reeks ligt mooi in het verlengde van zijn eerdere reeksen. Een mooie mix tussen historie en couleur locale, soms zo aandoenlijk dat het wat ongemakkelijk wordt. Wat er nu wel bijkomt, is de interactie met zijn kompanen Ruben en Philippe, wat een vleugje jongensachtige feelgood-televisie toevoegt. Volhouden is de boodschap dus, want na een paar aflevering komt het toch op gang. Sowieso ben je in zo'n reisprogramma voor een niet onaanzienlijk gedeelte afhankelijk van de omgeving. 3,5 sterren

Still a very nice series; so the persistence wins! Especially in the middle part there are some beautiful episodes, although it is mainly nature that enchants. Episode 4 is the best example of this; the Shetland and Orkney islands as a setting is fantastic, Fair Isle was even inviting to leave everything behind and go there!

Arnout Hauben brings no surprises, however, because the series is a nice extension of his earlier series. A nice mix between history and couleur locale, sometimes so touching that it becomes a bit uncomfortable. What is now added is the interaction with his companions Ruben and Philippe, which adds a touch of boyish feel-good television.

Persistence is the message, because after a few episodes it does get going. In any case, in such a travel program you are for a not inconsiderable part dependent on the environment.
