Dag & Nacht plot

They are available day and night. In the hospital where clinical obstetrician Ella heads the obstetrics department, the staff work long hours. Tough working conditions and a shortage of personnel cause a lot of stress and problems. Every day Ella and her colleagues guide the most diverse births, where pain and ecstasy go hand in hand and moments of deep happiness and fathomless sadness can alternate within a second.

In het derde seizoen van Dag & Nacht heeft scenariste Kim van Kooten het stokje overgedragen aan Esther Gerritsen en Jaap Peter Enderlé. Ditmaal speelt het verhaal zich af op de psychiatrische afdeling van het ziekenhuis (PAAZ), een setting die veel belooft maar niet altijd even overtuigend uit de verf komt. Hoewel er opnieuw oude bekenden opduiken als familieleden van patiënten, voelt dat hier en daar wat geforceerd. Ook de verhaallijnen van nieuwe patiënten missen soms geloofwaardigheid en slaan af en toe door in karikatuur — zoals bij de opgenomen minister. Je merkt dat de complexiteit van mentale problematiek zich lastig laat vangen in een serie die tegelijk vlot, geestig en dramatisch wil zijn. Daardoor verdwijnt een deel van de frisse humor die de eerdere seizoenen zo kenmerkte. Toch blijft er genoeg overeind om van te genieten: Dag & Nacht kent opnieuw een aantal prachtige, rake momenten en het acteerwerk is sterk, met opvallende rollen voor Aiko Beemsterboer en Georgina Verbaan.

In the third season of Dag & Nacht, screenwriter Kim van Kooten has handed the baton to Esther Gerritsen and Jaap Peter Enderlé. This time, the story takes place in the psychiatric ward of the hospital (PAAZ), a setting that promises much but does not always come across as convincing. Although familiar faces reappear as family members of patients, it feels somewhat forced here and there. The storylines of new patients also sometimes lack credibility and occasionally veer into caricature — such as with the hospitalized minister.

You notice that the complexity of mental health issues is difficult to capture in a series that aims to be fast-paced, witty, and dramatic all at once. As a result, some of the fresh humor that characterized the earlier seasons is lost. Nevertheless, enough remains to be enjoyed: Dag & Nacht once again features a number of beautiful, poignant moments, and the acting is strong, with standout performances from Aiko Beemsterboer and Georgina Verbaan.
