Geweldige serie. In tegenstelling tot veel series tegenwoordig is dit authentiek, spannend, politiek en goed geacteerd.

Great series. Unlike many series these days, this is authentic, exciting, political and well acted.

Voor het eerst een serie die het gevoel en de sfeer van het boek echt eer aan doet. En dit op een magistrale wijze met prachtige beelden en omgevingen en uitstekende casting en acteerprestaties.

Teleurstellend. Een zeer lang uitgesponnen versie van de oude miniserie. En de finale voelt helemaal niet finaal. Qua verhaal wijkt toch ook het nodige af. En hoe prima Cosmo Jarvis ook acteert, hij kan helaas qua charisma niet tippen aan Richard Chamberlain. Daar staat dan wel weer een overtuigende rol tegenover van Hiroyuki Sanada als de bedreigde lokale vorst Toragana, omdat hij voldoende gewicht toont als leider maar ook duidelijk worstelt met moeilijke keuzes. En vrouwe Mariko is ook goed gecast. Het voornaamste probleem van de serie is een gebrek aan tempo. Verder heeft de serie een bepaalde monotonie. We zien niet een erg kleurrijk Japan, alles oogt donker en sombertjes. De dialogen hebben vaak wat formeels zoals je kunt verwachten. Het rauwe Game Of Thrones achtige valt mee, het is niet zo dat je om de zoveel afleveringen weer een paar borsten op bestelling krijgt inclusief tamppartij. Bloederig is het slechts bij vlagen. De nadruk ligt op intrige en machtsspel, naast de moeilijke positie van Blackthorne die zijn leven nooit helemaal zeker is. Het is vooral veel praten. Ik ben niet jubelend na dit (kennelijk enige) seizoen. Het was van tijd tot tijd onderhoudend en leek daarom de moeite waard om te blijven kijken, maar het mist gewoon vaart en engagement, naast visuele flair, ondanks kostumering en een flinke dosis computeranimatie. Het einde is echt een complete teleurstelling, wat een onbevredigend einde, echt een sof met zo'n slappe afwikkeling van het verhaal.

There are also some differences in terms of story. And no matter how well Cosmo Jarvis acts, unfortunately he cannot match Richard Chamberlain in terms of charisma. On the other hand, Hiroyuki Sanada plays a convincing role as the threatened local prince Toragana, because he shows sufficient weight as a leader but also clearly struggles with difficult choices. And Lady Mariko is also well cast.

The main problem with the series is a lack of pacing. Furthermore, the series has a certain monotony. We don't see a very colorful Japan, everything looks dark and gloomy. The dialogues are often somewhat formal, as you would expect. The raw Game Of Thrones style isn't too bad, it's not like you get a pair of breasts made to order every few episodes, including a tamping session. It is only bloody at times. The emphasis is on intrigue and power play, in addition to the difficult position of Blackthorne, whose life is never completely secure. It's mainly a lot of talking.

I'm not jubilant after this (apparently only) season. It was entertaining from time to time and therefore seemed worth continuing to watch, but it simply lacks pace and commitment, in addition to visual flair, despite costuming and a heavy dose of computer animation.

The ending is a complete disappointment, what an unsatisfactory ending, a real disappointment with such a weak ending to the story.
