The Sandman plot

Morpheus, also called Dream, is the so-called 'Lord of Dreams'. He was once captured on Earth by mortal humans. After 105 years of captivity, he managed to free himself. After escaping, however, Morpheus realizes that his troubles have only just begun: after all, this eternal ruler of dreams has yet to reclaim the three totems of power, namely his pouch, his helmet and a ruby. After all, without these totems, he cannot rebuild his own world.

Mijn grootste kritiek op de serie is dat het veel te woke is. En dat na 30 jaar de scripts afkraken Neil Gaiman. Gays genoeg dat zeker, meeste mensen zijn nog steeds hetero tegenwoordig maar hier is er volgens mij geen enkele te vinden. Transgenders zijn er ook te zien. LGBTQ allemaal ok, maar we moeten niet overdrijven. Graag een degelijke balans. Hier lijkt het wel of elke man homo is. Ook Lucifer en Constantine zijn normaal toch mannen, nu ineens vrouwen. Het valt allemaal iets te hard op en dat zou niet mogen. Dan naar het verhaal. Het lijkt meer een anthologieserie hoewel er steeds wel een draad doorheen de verschillende afleveringen loopt. Kain en Abel, Lucifer, Dood, David Thewlis die wel weer goed is krijgt ook eigenlijk 2 afleveringen die op hem gericht zijn, daarna die man dat het eeuwig leven krijgt en daarna gaat het over Rose Walker en haar familie. De serie is dus nergens wauw, eerder middenmoot en je moet dus zelf weten of je het kijkt of niet.

My biggest criticism of the series is that it is way too woke. And that after 30 years the scripts are tearing down Neil Gaiman. Gay enough that's for sure, most people are still straight these days but I don't think there is one to be found here. Transgenders can also be seen there. LGBTQ all ok, but we shouldn't exaggerate. Would like a good balance. Here it seems that every man is gay. Also Lucifer and Constantine are normally men, now suddenly women. It's all a bit too loud and it shouldn't be.

Then to the story. It seems more like an anthology series although there is always a thread running through the different episodes. Kain and Abel, Lucifer, Death, David Thewlis who is well again actually gets 2 episodes that focus on him, then the man who gets eternal life and then it is about Rose Walker and her family. The series is therefore nowhere wow, rather average and so you have to know for yourself whether you watch it or not.

Ik heb nog nooit een serie gezien die zo erg met de woke cultuur bezig is. Eerste 3 afleveringen waren leuk, maar dat zakte al snel weg in een wereld van woke personages die geen enkele toevoeging hebben. Deze serie had potentie, maar vanaf aflevering 7 echt gestopt. Waar gaat de wereld heen.

I've never seen a series so much concerned with woke culture. First 3 episodes were fun, but that quickly faded into a world of woke characters that have no additions whatsoever. This series had potential, but from episode 7 it really stopped. Where is the world going.

Ondanks een paar wat mindere afleveringen is deze mix van genres overwegend de moeite waard. De hoofdpersoon is intrigerend genoeg om de reeks te dragen en gelukkig wordt het nergens te fantasy-achtig. De toon is goed getroffen en visueel ziet het er allemaal zeer verzorgd uit. Wel is het jammer dat de belangrijkste plotlijn (over de Vortex) er een beetje bekaaid afkomt vergeleken met de flashbacks en bepaalde zijsprongen.

Despite a few lesser episodes, this mix of genres is mostly worth checking out. The main character is intriguing enough to carry the series and luckily it never gets too fantasy-like. The tone is well hit and visually it all looks very neat. It's a pity that the main plot line (about the Vortex) comes off a bit thin compared to the flashbacks and certain side jumps.

Kitch zonder grote spanningsbogen. Veel special effects, maar het ziet er allemaal overdreven, kitcherig uit en soms weet het niet eens te overtuigen. Verder valt me op dat deze serie eigenlijk niet echt een spanningsboog heeft die zich over het gehele seizoen uitstrekt. In elke aflevering staat de hoofdpersoon voor een probleem of uitdaging en in plaats dat dat probleem zich uitdiept per episode, wordt het probleem eigenlijk elke aflevering opgelost waarna het volgende probleem voor de volgende aflevering gepresenteerd wordt. Dit hoeft geen probleem te zijn als de afleveringen episodisch zijn (en sommige van mijn favoriete series zijn episodisch), maar dat is deze serie nu ook weer niet. Kortom, het is het allemaal net niet. qua plot. Verder een aantal flauwe culturele verwijzingen, zoals Kain en Abel en Musen en wat allemaal nog. Het is allemaal onderdeel van onze folklore, dus voelt het allemaal niet verrassend aan en diep uitgewerkt wordt het nergens. Het acteerwerk van de hoofdrolspeler is ook behoorlijk dramatisch. Monotoon, zonder enige emotie. Die heeft zijn karakter wel degelijk, maar zelfs al zou dat niet zo zijn, dan komt de hoofdrolspeler eerder als een robot over dan een eeuwiglevend personage, die door zijn ervaring boven emoties staat. Wel leuk was de toevoeging van Stephen Fry overigens. Samenvattend is deze serie duidelijk niet aan mij besteed. 1*.

Kitch without major tensions. Lots of special effects, but it all looks exaggerated, kitschy and sometimes it doesn't even convince.

I also notice that this series doesn't really have a tension that extends over the entire season. In each episode the main character faces a problem or challenge and instead of that problem deepening per episode, the problem is actually solved every episode after which the next problem is presented for the next episode. This shouldn't be a problem if the episodes are episodic (and some of my favorite series are episodic), but this series isn't. In short, it's just not all. in terms of plot. Furthermore, a number of bland cultural references, such as Cain and Abel and Musen and what else. It's all part of our folklore, so it doesn't feel surprising and it's not worked out in depth anywhere.

The acting of the lead actor is also quite dramatic. Monotonous, without any emotion. He certainly has his character, but even if that were not the case, then the protagonist comes across as a robot rather than an ever-living character, who is above emotions because of his experience. The addition of Stephen Fry was nice, by the way.

In summary, this series is clearly not for me. 1*.
