A tight enough. Halfway through the series you realize that there are several genres present, but they do not all work together flawlessly. The characters are well developed, and with Moss at the head (who is unable to give a bad performance) you do get emotionally involved and invested; That the plot is not well put together is easier to forgive because of that.

Shining Girls puts a new spin on the serial killer genre. An impulse that is welcome, but not yet completely successful. Shining Girls is a dark thriller that is conventional in the first half, but takes on a more supernatural character from episode four. The series is set in different time zones in previous centuries, and the killer on duty moves like a time traveler between these periods. Seeing is believing.

Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid's tale, Top of the Lake), also executive producer, is excellent as protagonist and victim Kirby Mazrachi. Alternately vulnerable, stubborn and persistent, on the verge of paranoia, she investigates the murders that go back to a distant past. With a touch of Stephen King (as in The Outsider), Shining Girls is an exciting, fresh and surprising take on a genre that is starting to get a bit jaded, partly due to all the films, series and true crime docu's. All changes in time eventually tire quite a bit (with episode 6 as the low point), and detract from the intriguing story. For the lover of an intelligent thriller, there is (just) enough to enjoy.
