Yesterday the first two parts on the Belgian. That means the full bite without interruption. What is striking about this British miniseries: real characters (not the clichรฉs of Hollywood), atmosphere (enhanced by the magnificent Irish landscape), no needless violence to keep viewers attention. Straightforward eye candy in the form of Lisa Dwan, albeit a smaller role. The story is set against the backdrop of a still smoldering conflict in Ireland. But that does give a lot of excuses to get away with twists in the story. Nevertheless, makes curious about remaining parts.

The bill is promising: police thriller, Ireland, Jed Mercurio (Line of Duty, Bodyguard) and James Cold Feet Nesbitt! That's too good to be true. That's not it. The screenplay is craftsmanship. But despite the necessary twists & turns, after the second part (of 4), a certain sluggishness seems to set in. James Nesbitt ponders a bit, there are a lot of movements (car, boat) and it is almost never really exciting anymore. Maybe it's also because the theme of the 2nd half of the series is more dramatic than exciting: how do you break free from your dark past and be someone you want to be now? As james_cameron_tv indicates: special that there will be an S2. I didn't see that coming either.

Potential enough, unfortunately not always as strong.
The cast does a reasonable to just good job, unfortunately the script has flaws that affect the acting somewhat. Many plot developments and not every development in them can be called equally strong. Perhaps it's that too much hay is taken and therefore the characters don't always come across as believable.
Not a bad series, but could have been more.
