The Great plot

An idealistic, romantic young Catharine travels to Russia for an arranged marriage to her cousin, Emperor Peter. Huzzah! At times, the first season of 'The Great' is reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick's 'Barry Lyndon' (1975). The abrasive contrast between the boorish aristocracy and the places of sublime beauty in which they find themselves. The magnificent sets, colorful costumes, and countless references to painting, literature, architecture, and even philosophy. Featuring political machinations where the worst in humanity comes to the surface to bring about some change or to preserve what is good. Sometimes farcical and frivolous, and sometimes pitch-black. Unlike Kubrick's classic, 'The Great' delves deeper into feminist themes such as the right to self-determination and how a female leader must bend the patriarchy to find her own voice. An ever-enchanting Catharine (Elle Fanning) has her hands full with the Trumpian goings-on surrounding her husband Peter (Nicholas Hoult). How does she keep the imperial dwarf in check, who finds himself in the shadow of so much historical grandeur?
