Edmond Dantes is about to be promoted to captain in the French navy and about to marry the beautiful Mercedes. Jealous colleagues ensure that he, although innocent, is sentenced to life in prison. A priest offers solace by telling him about a treasure hidden on the island of Monte Cristo.
