Atmospheric film adaptation of a story by the Romanian writer Mircea Eleide about the ghost of a seductive woman who haunts a castle and holds the residents under her spell. The fiancée of the daughter of the house must fight evil. Nice and scary, you think. Well that is not too bad. The film focuses more on atmosphere than on tension. Although the rather violent ending is skillfully worked towards.
The story is a mixture of mystery, fantasy, horror and vampirism.i So everything Eliede could find in the supernatural is there. A bit too much for my taste. The story was previously made into a film by Viorel Sergovici in 1992. It also offers a nice insight into the life of the pre-war nobility in the countryside. The beautiful castle where the recordings were made is the castle of the Ghika family in Dofteana.
