I expected a little more from the film, but still thought it was a reasonable film, even though Robert Downey Jr. too much of it. He played so over the top that it was no longer beautiful.

A mix of drama and thriller.

Interesting movie with a mysterious story. I would therefore rather call the genre mystery than horror. For the role of Vivian, they could have cast someone else for me. I thought Bening was a good choice for the annoying Claire. The whole thing is pretty improbable, but I didn't think that detracted from the plot and the setting in particular. I thought it was a captivating movie and there were even some tense moments. So from me an average score plus..... one star for the final song: 'In Dreams' by Roy Orbison. Can hardly be more appropriate.

Revised. Visually, the film has withstood the test of time well, something that is mainly due to the beautiful camera work of Darius Khondji, but in terms of content it is a mess. After a reasonable first half, things finally go wrong when Robert Downey Jr. shows up as a childish serial killer. He is simply not suitable for such a role and lacks the necessary menacing appearance. Annette Bening is also quite insufferable in the hysterical leading role. A missed opportunity, all in all. The opening scene under water, with the town disappearing into a reservoir, still impresses, however.
