Timbuktu plot

"A song for freedom"

From one day to the next, the streets in Malian Timbuktu are teeming with armed men with veiled faces and long robes. With the help of megaphones they impose new rules of life on the population. It is jihadists who have taken over the regime in the region. Football, smoking and music are banned, dress codes are introduced and corporal punishment is applied according to the rules of Sharia. Cattle owner Kidane and his family, who live far outside the city, also cannot escape the jihadists' sphere of influence.

Abderrahmane Sissako's (the director of this film) superior indictment of extremism is both a farce and a tragedy, about the occupation of northern Mali by Muslim extremists.

In this story, Kidane (Ibrahim Ahmed) drives cattle with his wife and daughter in the dunes around Timbuktu in the African country of Mali. In the city, residents seem to be suffering under the terror regime of the jihadists. Kidane and his family are spared violence, but their fate changes when Kidane accidentally kills a fisherman during a struggle.

This Drama movie was clearly made on a budget, but the acting and story are impressive. In it, elegant and striking scenes sketch the hypocrisy and the otherworldliness of the jihadists, who harass the residents with bizarre rules, such as not being allowed to sit in the sun in front of your house. So for me a useful rule, because I burn very quickly in the sun

All in all just a good Drama film, which was nominated for an "Oscar" and seven "Césars" won in France.

Well, decent film about a small desert village that is suddenly terrorized by a gang of jihadists. Let the images speak to you, because there is not much dialogue in the film, but that was also somewhat disappointing. Confronting at times, but not with the same impact I had with, for example The Stoning of Soraya M. (2008) where the stoning really cuts through the marrow and leg went (it didn't have to be that striking now).

At times an interesting but absurd train of thought of the jihadists with ridiculous rules in the name of God. In terms of atmosphere successful with the soundtrack and beautiful images. It's just a shame that I didn't feel too involved with the characters. It all seemed quite distant.

At times I thought this was quite a nice film, especially because it is largely an atmospheric portrait of the lives of a few people. Especially the nuance around Islam is very nice. All the characters in the film are Muslim so somewhere they are on the same side, but then again not with their different interpretations. Also the extreme believers are not bloodthirsty murderers but adhere to rules in a mosque. They're new in town, and they're just probing. The film scores on those points, in addition to the sometimes excellent images. Towards the end there is more plot and drama, for me that was unnecessary and takes away some of the power and changes the tone a bit. Otherwise the score would certainly have been higher. 3.5*.
