Die Frau, Die Sich Traut plot

The fifty-year-old mother, grandmother and employee Beate wants to change her life. She used to be a celebrated swimmer in the GDR and now that her doctor has diagnosed cancer, an old dream returns: against all advice, she wants to swim across the English Channel. At this crossroads in her life, she wants to put her own needs first and no longer subordinate herself to those of her children and employer. She feels that all this is her own fault. She begins the hard training and soon realizes that she must fight not only against the cold waters of the English Channel, but also against the will of her children who cannot cope with this new situation. But Beate is supported by her best friend Henni.
