Al-Yawm al-Sadis plot
In 1947, a cholera epidemic wreaked havoc in Egypt. Saddika, a 40-year-old woman, lives in a basement with her disabled husband. She is the washerwoman for her favorite actress, Zeinab. One day, Saddika's grandson Hassan takes a friend out for dinner. A showman and monkey trainer, Okka's seductive nature quickly pierces Saddika's mask. But she tries to discourage Okka, because she has more important concerns. She fears Hassan has cholera and she fears the health service.
