Buitenkampers plot
Documentary that highlights the experiences of Dutch people who stayed outside the Japanese camps during the Second World War in the Dutch East Indies. Most of these were Indies Dutch. They had a hard time surviving in a country, including their own, which, under the leadership of the Japanese occupier and the Indonesian nationalists, increasingly turned against everything that was Dutch, and they were and remained so. The downside to their relative freedom of movement outside the camps was their vulnerability to the Indonesian nationalists. It started with bullying and ended with the murderous pemoedas in the Bersiap time. All this eventually continued after 1949 in extremely difficult decisions about the choice between the cold homeland on the North Sea and the familiar motherland where they were no longer welcome.
