A poor miller's son is abandoned by his brothers with nothing but a cat. It turns out that the cat has the gift of speaking. The cat is very smart and devises a grand plan for achieving title, wealth, and marriage from its owner. He begins to carry it out, using a few birds and rabbits as gifts for the king, his own wits, and a pair of boots that make him appear human.
