Quite messy in the beginning, with women walking through the screen and quickly talking (who is who?) and it takes a while before we see the face of the main character, but fortunately afterwards there is clarity and the characters are better explained without it really impresses.

In the second part of the film, emotion creeps in and certain scenes (the beach scenes for example) can be called successful.

The ending best underlines the sad part of the story. Certainly not the best film on this subject, but still with a certain originality.

A small 3.5.

Uprooted families in a late capitalist Mexico. In the opening scenes, young Claudia (Ximena Ayala) is a sphinx-like beauty who, in her everyday monotony, is haunted by the absence of something or someone. During a hospitalization, Claudia meets the terminally ill Martha (Lisa Owen), who fathered a small army of children with different fathers. The care and friendship relationship between the closed twenties and the worldly mother figure flows smoothly, with a plot that has few major developments but does pay a lot of attention to cozy domesticity. Have breakfast or dinner together. Hanging out in front of the television. Do the laundry or clean. But especially children/young people with major life issues about sex, love and how to deal with their mother's illness.

'The Amazing Catfish' (2013) has just enough going for it to be more than a predictable indie with a yellow beetle, cute kids and an aquarium with a goldfish. Not least because lead actress Ximena Ayala is the kind of actress who thrives in a role where she has little visible emotion on her face, but says so much in the few moments where she glimpses herself. Unfortunately, the family dynamic itself remains somewhat superficial - the relationship between the children never really becomes clear - and towards the end the sentiment completely wins over the layering. The themes that the film touches on indirectly - such as the laughably sad supermarket environment where Claudia works - are also not sufficiently emphasized to say anything substantial. I may have shed a tear at the credits, but I'm afraid the movie won't stay with me anymore.

Film about the growing affection between a single young woman who could use some warmth in her life and a seriously ill woman who is the head of a chaotic family. The film does not quite meet my expectations, but still scores above average, mainly thanks to the beautiful role of Ximena Ayala.
