The Red House plot
"“Is home the place you are from, or what you carry inside you wherever you go?”"
Lee and Jia have been together for about 20 years. Lee is a wildlife activist in New Zealand and has lived with Jia since she left China; in a red house and surrounded by nature. The film provides an intimate portrait of the married couple, making it clear that communication is more than just words. Lee has not been able to prevent the damage to nature in his region and this gnaws at him. Jia returns to China to take care of her parents, who are no longer able to do so themselves, and Lee travels with them. The effects of globalization and economic development in China are a central theme.
