Albert II is a five-part fiction series about the Belgian royal family. The series is rooted in historical reality. It begins with the death of King Baudouin and the accession of King Albert in 1993. The story then follows a number of important events in the Royal family during the past two decades.

Na de prima documentaire over Filip van België die dit jaar op Canvas werd uitgezonden, ben ik deze "fictiereeks binnen historische krijtlijnen" over het koningschap van Albert II maar eens gaan bekijken. Die aankondiging alleen was al een fiks waarschuwingsschot, en de eerste aflevering was niet meteen denderend, maar ik besloot - zoals altijd bij het kijken van series - te volharden tot het eind. Het was een hele zit. Fictie, binnen historische krijtlijnen, dus. Die historische krijtlijnen zijn dan de gebeurtenissen zelf, en al zitten daar chronologische foutjes in, de grote lijnen zullen inderdaad wel kloppen. De fictie, dat zijn de dialogen, gedragingen en reacties van de diverse personages. Daar loopt het meermaals mis, wat mij betreft. Lucas Van den Eynde zet weliswaar een prima koning Albert II neer, en Stefaan Degand trekt de aandacht als de excentrieke womanizer annex getraumatiseerde ziel Laurent; de overige personages kunnen me niet echt boeien. Al moet ik erbij vertellen dat Ludo Busschots een goeie Van Yperseele neerzet. Vooral de dialogen vielen me behoorlijk tegen. Ik voelde nergens echt een vonk, er werd ook iets teveel ingezet op het karikaturale aspect. Ik las ergens dat de personages met stripfiguren worden vergeleken, en daar kan ik deels in meegaan. Misschien was het geen goed idee om deze reeks, die door de VRT destijds als prestigieus werd aangekondigd (kijk, daar gaat het al mis), meteen na die goed verzorgde docu te bekijken? Nu ja, dit is me niet echt bevallen.. 2 sterren

After the excellent documentary about Filip van België that was broadcast on Canvas this year, I went to see this "fiction series within historical outlines" about the kingship of Albert II. That announcement alone was a hefty warning shot, and the first episode wasn't immediately great, but I decided - as always when watching series - to persevere until the end. It was a long sitting.

Fiction, in other words, within historical boundaries. Those historical outlines are then the events themselves, and although there are chronological errors in them, the broad outlines will indeed be correct. The fiction, that is the dialogues, behavior and reactions of the various characters. That's where it goes wrong, in my opinion. It is true that Lucas Van den Eynde portrays a fine King Albert II, and Stefaan Degand attracts attention as the eccentric womanizer annex traumatized soul Laurent; the other characters don't really interest me. Although I have to say that Ludo Busschots puts down a good Van Yperseele.

I especially liked the dialogues. I didn't really feel a spark anywhere, there was also a bit too much emphasis on the caricatural aspect. I read somewhere that the characters are compared to cartoon characters, and I can partly agree with that.

Maybe it wasn't a good idea to watch this series, which was announced as prestigious by the VRT at the time (look, that's where it goes wrong), immediately after that well-crafted documentary? Well, I didn't really like this.
