Irene is a widow and mother of three grown children. Left alone with the dog in her large, dilapidated house, she does her utmost to keep her family together. Her son Claudio becomes increasingly estranged from his mother, because she adamantly refuses to face his homosexuality. Partly for this reason, Claudio feels it is impossible to enter into a serious love relationship. Both his sisters have their own problems. Rita, a melancholy and fragile beauty, tries against her better judgment to save her marriage to Carlo. Sara has been unable to commit to anyone since her husband's death and clings to her son
