Kyûketsu Dokuro-sen plot

The ship 'Dragon King', carrying a cargo of gold, is ambushed on the high seas by pirates led by a mysterious man with a distinctive scar and sunglasses. The crew is gruesomely murdered and the ship disappears in the fog at sea. Three years later, Saeko, still grieving the loss of her sister three years earlier, finds a group of skeletons linked by chains along the coast. The atmosphere in the otherwise quiet coastal town turns into a nightmare when the 'Dragon King' suddenly shows up off the coast.

The first thing I noticed about this old Japanese man was the unusual editing; Even at the beginning of the hijacking, the perspective and scene are changed several times out of nowhere. I was a bit afraid that I would see some garbled version, but I don't think that's possible. Later in the film it isn't that bad again, although it still happens in a number of flashbacks. Anyway, other than that we have an atmospheric film that is sometimes very nice, and at other times it misses the mark a bit. Maybe I missed something in the dialogues, but some events and plot points came completely out of the blue for me, although the intention may have been to just throw all kinds of horror elements into the film without much of an overarching plot. Although at some point there is some cheesy, Hammer-esque story about mad scientists and the undead. Also in terms of atmosphere it is sometimes a bit creepy, only to then take a different approach with terrible overacting and incredibly fake effects (those skeletons under water, for example, or the bats). But still, I thought it was an entertaining collection of events with perhaps not a lot of coherence or logic, but enough weirdness, doppelgängers, bats and skeletons to not get bored.

Not such a great horror film from Japan. I did have some trouble with the Spanish subtitles - I didn't find anything else - but I couldn't shake the impression that it was otherwise quite a mess. The story was certainly not the strongest point of the film.

It wasn't really creepy either. And the film title is a bit misleading. There are some skeletons involved a number of times, but many of them were not shown or added something to the whole. The skeletons were taken straight from the haunted house, by the way.

A nice scene here and there, like with the acid, but that's it. Overall quite bland, but it remains a nice watch for once.
