Moderate assembly.

There is little wrong with the acting performances in this crime drama. The film has some nice dialogues and unpredictable course. The mediocre editing, however, causes unnecessary irritation and confusion and the ending is also a bit rushed.

Reasonable.

A movie I enjoyed watching. Even if by today's standards it is a long-winded case in which not much happens. I enjoyed the dialogues, mutual relationships, ... It seems like a police film, but there is more going on than that, especially it seems to result in a solid portion of social criticism. It is beautifully portrayed by a director who knows what he is doing, with references to classic film noir. The tone of the movie is fairly nihilistic and cynical too. The running gag in which Paul Winfield is all the time 'racist' about white people up to and including the albino ... as if Aldrich wants to make a point here by reversing what you usually expect in film (and reality) . Also enjoyed the nice brown seventies decors and costumes.
The ending in which Winfield brings bad news to Deneuve I found at first sight too melo and therefore a regrettable miss. Fortunately, that is compensated with what just precedes it. With none other than Robert Englund, your favorite nightmare, serving as the young mugger. For that alone, the film is worth watching.
