Exeter plot

"An excellent day for an exorcism"

During a wild party of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll, six teenagers find an old vinyl record. They decide to play the record backwards in hopes of discovering hidden satanic messages. Suddenly, a seemingly evil spirit appears and moves from one body to another. In the end it turns out that the ghost in question is trying to get a message across, and that the true source of the misery is not paranormal, but something or someone close to them...

Mediocre.

Once the game is up and running, it's not a bad film. Visually attractive, the gore occasionally fun and well paced. That twist at the end is indeed corny, but hey, you don't watch this kind of nonsense for the story anyway.

The problem is that you first have to go through a lot of annoying nonsense to get to the horror part. Another group of youth that is insufferable. Very annoying people to hang out with and that is expected of the audience for a good 30 minutes.

Furthermore, I quite agree with jeroentjuhhhhh. Meanwhile, horror from the old school, it's not all that great anymore and certainly not when someone like Nispel just repeats the old formula without adding anything to it. As a filler it's not too bad, but that's where it ends. On the other hand, Nispel has never been a horror talent, so you didn't have to expect much from this film.

2.5*

Not very original horror, and apart from a few scare effects, not very exciting either. The director (best known for remakes) produces something of his own making. So not a remake, but again not something that is original. After all, the reason ("kids do something they are not allowed"), the strange peripheral characters and the setting ("scary empty building") are well known. This is also the further interpretation of the story.

Visually it looks good. The institution as a setting is also good and is presented in a scary way.

The acting is so-so.

The dryly funny humor is fun and successful. Without that humor, sitting through the film would have been an impossible task.

After increasingly fewer film successes, the career of director Marcus Nispel seemed to be finally coming to an end and Exeter regularly gives the impression that it is a kind of last convulsion. It would take Nispel 8 years before he could tackle his next directorial project and that was only an episode of the morning news. Nevertheless, his latest feature film is quite entertaining as long as you don't go there as a viewer with the highest expectations. It just takes a while for the film to get going, with a lot of half-developed main characters being crammed together and a lot of weak motives. The acting is by definition not bad, but the screenplay by Nispel and Kirsten Elms is not interested in any depth, which means that no member can really shine. Once the hurried setup is completed, Nispel then moves on to an exorcism event, but this too only comes off half way. It ultimately takes an hour before the stops open and only then can the viewer marvel at deliciously explicit acts of violence and a fast pace. The choice of location is excellent and the decoration of Exeter exudes professionalism, but the messy scenario single-handedly puts a stop to most of the positive points. It is somewhat inexplicable to me how Nispel came up with such a thin horror project after all those big films, but hopefully he can bounce back in the future.
