The Betrayal plot
Norwegian Karen Winther tries to remember what possessed her as a teenager to betray her left-wing squatters friends to the neo-Nazis. Around the age of 15, the maker and protagonist of the documentary joins the anti-fascist youth group 'Blitz'. As the youngest of the group, however, Karen doesn't find the home she's looking for. She makes a decision that she can hardly forgive herself for later: she becomes a spy for the neo-Nazis. Anders Breivik cites the squatters stronghold Blitz on a forum in 2009 as the reason for founding a Norwegian variant of the English Defense League (the extreme right-wing sympathizers of Geert Wilders). To what extent does 'The Betrayal' offer an insight into what is haunting Breivik's thoughts? Does Breivik come from an environment where tensions between the far right and left have been underground for ages? Incidentally, the film is a window into the political world of Oslo, where clashes between youthful groups of anti-fascists and the far right take place in the mid-1990s.
