Michael Nyman in Progress plot
The British composer of contemporary music Michael Nyman (1944) has been acclaimed since the 1980s for the striking music he wrote for Peter Greenaway's films, as well as for his various operas, concerts and string quartets. But nothing in his body of work could match the success of his soundtrack for the Oscar-winning film 'The Piano'. The album sold three million copies worldwide. However, the success proved to be no unqualified pleasure for Nyman, as the public for a long time associated his name almost entirely with the lyrical, romantic music he created for 'The Piano'. It took him almost fifteen years to stop being exclusively identified with this film by the public. In recent years, however, there has been a new appreciation for Nyman's talents. The documentary begins with the celebration of his sixty-fifth birthday in March 2009, and follows him on his travels to Berlin, Mexico, Poland and the Netherlands. Sylvia Beck was given exclusive and long-term access to the composer for this film, which thereby paints a unique picture of his personal world.
