Zoete Rook van het Vaderland plot
Sweet smoke from the homeland begins with these lines from the poem 'End and Begin' by Polish Nobel Prize winner Wisława Szymborska. The documentary tells the story of three ancient people from three very different places in Europe: Catalonia, Lithuania and Abkhazia. People who saw wars come and go, and who chose not to participate in them but to stand aside, cultivate the land and clean up the mess. All three live in the place where they were born. They feed the chickens and the goats, they cook on a wood stove, they cultivate some land – as far as they can. This makes Zoete rook van het Vaderland not only a story about war and how people react to it, but also about old age and loneliness, about people who feel connected to the soil that produced them and where they have experienced so much. They continue to live there, with all their beautiful and painful memories and their dreams, which they still have despite everything.
