Cuatro Dólares de Venganza plot
The American Civil War is over and Officer Roy Dexter is assigned to bring South-minted gold coins to Washington. The assignment must remain secret. However, he tells his friend Barry Haller. They are in love with the same girl and want her answer. She chooses Dexter. En route, Dexter is ambushed and the gold is stolen. He is accused of treason, but manages to escape to find the true traitor.

The film is loosely based on the novel “The Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexandre Dumas and moves the story from France to the Wild West. In Cuatro Dólares de Venganza protagonist Roy Dexter is the amiable golden boy who is always one step ahead of his friend Barry Haller in a sincere way. He makes a faster career and manages to win over the girl Mercedes, whom Haller also has an eye on. This makes bad blood with Haller.
After the rather concisely presented introduction, the film starts to build up its tension when Dexter's life suddenly becomes less successful. He falls into disrepair through no fault of his own. The film follows him on his path to revenge and rehabilitation. His goal is to mercilessly punish the betrayal and backbiting that led to his being robbed of his life. The film mainly chooses the path of drama to show the hero's attempts. That is not very exciting. The characters are too caricatural for that, the dialogues are too thin and the story is too predictable.
The melodramatic path fortunately has some side roads that contain action scenes. That fact sounds more exciting than it is. The fight scenes are not very excitingly choreographed. Moreover, in these scenes the drama comes around the corner again in the form of exaggerated acting that reveals itself in a hilarious way when a blow is thrown or a man falls off his horse. Sometimes the action scenes are just so bad that you can laugh a lot for that reason. Very nice of course, but it does not do the tension in the film any good.
Despite all these handicaps, Cuatro Dólares de Venganza is pleasant to watch. The film has a fairly short playing time and events follow each other quickly. There is no boredom. However, a pleasant immersion in the western feeling never overcame me while watching.
