After So Long, My Son the second film I see by director Wang. Here too, the waterfront is a key location and (the legacy of) the cultural revolution is highlighted. A clever script and refined direction, because at the best moments glances and choices in the editing do the work without too much talking. At the same time, the film is playful and noisy, because we watch along with an eleven-year-old boy and his pleasantly clumsy friends. The issue of the 'dissident' versus the oppressive order in an empathetic drama.

Nice coming of age of eleven-year-old Wang Han during the Chinese Cultural Revolution around the 1970s. Cinematographically very beautiful film that gives a nice insight into the goings-on in a Chinese village surrounded by forests.

Interesting development when the dissident comes to the fore in the story and the ignorant boy cannot properly estimate what impact his actions will or will not have. The communist regime is mainly palpable in the background, but also occasionally seeps prominently into the film.

Affable and subdued, very nice to see!

It is 1975 in Southwest China, the last year of the Cultural Revolution, and 11-year-old Wang Han [Wenqing Lui] leads a carefree life in a small village where everything goes according to the (Red) Book. Until Wang Han comes face to face with a seriously injured man [Ziyi Wang] at the river who is fleeing from the police and threatens to kill Wang Han if he speaks out. Wang Han only shares his secret with his three best friends, but as he learns more about what exactly happened, he realizes that his life will never be the same again. Wang takes the time to show the daily routine of the children at that time, without making any explicit judgments about it. The children in particular play excellently. The title is a reference to Wang Han's father [Jingchun Wang], an actor and draftsman who is working on a painting of flowers and takes the time to teach his son about some of the great European painters.
