How jazz actually originated in New Orleans does not correspond with this sappy story, although there is a grain of truth in it. Jazz & blues was the music of the disadvantaged blacks and it took a while before it became acceptable among the white majority. It is also a fact that many New Orleans tenors moved to Chicago and other cities because of the bitter poverty in the South (The Great Migration 1916-1919).

It's great that Louis Armstrong is here. When you see him here, you wouldn't immediately think so, but he was one of the original geniuses of jazz. So his presence in this film is well placed. We also see jazz diva Billie Holiday at work in her only film role. When she is introduced, as a maid to a rich white man, she is caught playing the piano. Striking. Then we also have Woody Herman, legendary clarinetist and orchestra leader. We also have a cameo as himself from blues pianist Meade Lux Lewis. Lots of beautiful people who provide nice musical intermezzos. It can be said that the music completely overshadows the trivial story. Fair enough. More interesting as a historical artifact than as a film.
