In the 1950s, Hollywood's major film studios tried to lure audiences back to the cinemas with grand public films. These films were mainly set in Roman times and they scored their greatest successes with films such as Ben-Hur, The Ten Commandments and Spartacus. Both commercially and artistically.

A film about the mythical kingdom of Atlantis was therefore a rewarding subject for a great film, but the film studio MGM only made a meager budget available. Director George Pal had been thinking about an idea for a film about the demise of Atlantis for a long time. After he achieved great success in 1960 with The Time Machine, MGM gave him the opportunity to realize his dream, but as mentioned, with a meager budget. Due to the ongoing strike among script writers, he also had to make do with an unfinished script. The end result is that Atlantis: The Lost Continent has become a mediocre film, with a thin story and few impressive scenes that we are used to with such films.

Due to budget limitations, director Pal had to make do with many archive images of old films such as Quo Vadis and The Naked Jungle. For example, in various mass scenes we see people walking around in Roman clothing. And while the story is in fact supposed to take place thousands of years before the rise of the Roman era. According to legend, the demise of Atlantis took place about 11,000 years ago, but in the film there is already mention of a Greek culture (which started about 3,000 years ago). The film is therefore not very historically accurate, but that is the least of our concerns with this film. The film is simply not interesting enough. The story starts slowly, the acting is mediocre and the tricks often look quite clumsy. The downfall of the mythical empire Atlantis deserved a better film than this pulp film.

Fun and especially cheesy adventure film, the story is excellent and the cast does their best. For the rest, I really enjoy watching these kinds of 60s adventure films, 3 stars overall.
