I was very pleased with him. The first film I saw by James Ivory was The Remains of the Day, also with Hopkins, and I liked it but also found it very boring here and there. I had much less of that with this film. It wasn't all that exciting here and there, but still very interesting with a fantastic Hopkins who steals the show as Pablo Picasso. 3*

I've been looking for this film for a long time - and as these things go, when you finally find it, it gradually becomes clear why it was so hard to find.

The subject is certainly interesting enough, and the actors are beyond any doubt - yes, it is McElhone's first serious role in a feature film, but she brings everything that can be expected to the role. Unlike a Hopkins, a Moore - who in far too many scenes stand around, biting at biscuits as if they were recruited from the local football club.

What is wrong with this film is the direction, which makes numerous mistakes. The story has the potential to be very interesting, but it doesn't come out - first of all because the narration simply doesn't work, but besides that the timing is also wrong, the mise-en-scene is almost always unfortunate, the actors don't get the chance to show their talent.

About the only thing I'm okay with is the set dressing. Small victories.

Too bad, this could have been done with so much more. Truly a film to forget, one not to sell, one to leave off your resume. James Ivory still has some success as a writer in his twilight years, let's grant him that.
