Pianomania plot
Stefan Knüpfer, Steinway & Sons' engaging concert technician and piano tuner, assists a number of famous concert pianists in their search for the perfect sound. With humor, patience and a good dose of inventiveness, he tinkers with the grand pianos until the sound can charm the pianists. That is not always an easy task. "Pianists are never really satisfied," Knüpfer confides to the camera. If necessary, he tinkers late into the night on the hammerheads or works like a true inventor with electric drills, tennis balls and self-manufactured 'sound reflectors'. In the run-up to the Bach recordings of Pierre-Laurent Aimard in the Wiener Konzerthaus, tensions are running high. Will Knüpfer succeed in finding a good alternative to Aimard's favorite Steinway, which has been sold to his great dismay? He starts a search for a new grand piano that can meet the requirements of the perfectionist pianist.
