"Nothing is stronger than love. Except war."
In 1989, in the Yugoslavian town of Vukovar, Ana and Toma furnish their future home. She is Croatian and he is Serbian. On TV they see the fall of the Berlin Wall. Enthusiasm and euphoria all around. They get married a few months later. Their marriage is disrupted by Croatian nationalists who want to see all Serbs leave Vukovar. Toma is called up to serve in the Yugoslav army and leaves. Ana is left alone, pregnant and afraid of what will come.
