Sarabah plot
As a woman, you don't just become successful in the male-dominated Senegalese rap scene. Sister Fa did it. Circumcised as a child, the Queen of Hip Hop is now committed to spare Senegalese girls from this suffering. In the documentary Sarabah she returns to her native village to fight this age-old tradition with music and education. Oppression is a regularly recurring topic in Sister Fa's music, but the theme of circumcision, which has been illegal in Senegal since 1999, is not mentioned. Until she goes to live in Berlin with her Austrian partner and has a child of her own. Then she decides to travel with her band to her native country, where she wants to break the taboo with music. The campaign evoked varying reactions. For example, a man states that only circumcised women can be sexually satisfied. And we hear from a midwife what the terrible consequences of circumcisions can be during childbirth. Despite her fear of rejection, Sister Fa engages in conversation with the village women in charge. But are the women willing to break an age-old tradition?
